The Honorable W.K. Moore, Chief Justice of The Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta was simply "Ken" Moore when he made his many marks during a hectic six years at this University from 1946 to 1952. Born and raised in Calgary, he served in The Royal Canadian Navy in the last year of WW II before taking up studies toward a B.A. (1949) and an LLB (1952). In football, he played offensive tackle in 1946 and then moved to fullback, a position at which he excelled as a consistent rushing and scoring threat for the next two years.
After the 1948 season, Western Canadian university football went into an eleven year hiatus. Undeterred, Ken, along with several other Golden Bears, turned professional with the revived Edmonton Eskimos (1949 and 1950) and moved on to his hometown Stampeders for the 1951 and 1952 seasons.
As an undergraduate Ken was active in no fewer than four different intramural sports, and in 1950 was the individual high point winner in men's intramurals. He managed the Golden Bear Basketball team in 1949-50 and served a term as President of the Block A Club.
A twenty year career as the senior partner in a major Calgary law firm was marked by his appointment as Q.C. in 1968 and being named to the Trial Division of the Supreme Court of Alberta in 1972. On the way he served as President of the Alberta Bar Association and as a member of the National Executive of The Canadian Bar Association.
Ken and Audrey have raised a family of four boys and three girls. In the process, he has been active in his community as a coach, a board member in numerous charities, and the Boy Scouts. He was a director of the Stampeder Football Club and The Calgary Stampede Association, serving the latter as President.
Recipient of an Honourary Doctor of Laws from this University in June of 1988, his outstanding professional contributions were further recognized by being appointed Vice-Chairman of The Canadian Judicial Council in September, 1988.
Kenneth Moore represents the kind of citizen that has given strength to our country: a loving father and husband, an energetic professional with a willingness to contribute to the growth of his profession and a community leader at many levels of involvement. The University of Alberta is proud to count him as one of our own and to place his name on the Sports Wall of Fame.
