Peter Lougheed was born, raised, and attended school in Calgary where he excelled as a student and athlete in hockey, basketball, football, baseball and track. He continued in that tradition when he attended the University of Alberta where he met his wife Jeanne. As a Golden Bear football player he was the classic triple-threat backfielder on offense, equally dangerous running, passing, or kicking the ball. He was always a scoring threat running back kicks, and on defense he starred at halfback and safety. He did not confine his efforts to sport and the classroom, however. Showing an early interest in politics, he served as President of the Students' Union in 1951-52. Later he was one of a number of former Golden Bears who moved on to play for the Edmonton Eskimos when they returned to the CFL in 1949.

Meanwhile, he earned a B.A. in 1949 enroute to a degree in law in 1952. After graduation from Alberta he went on to Harvard where he qualified for a Master's in Business Administration.

A stint in business was followed by the establishment of a law practice in Calgary and growing involvement in politics. Assuming leadership of the Alberta Progressive Conservative Party in 1965, he was elected to the Legislature and became Official Leader of the Opposition in 1967.

In 1971, he led the party to a landslide victory and began his tenure as Premier which was to continue until he stepped out of politics in 1985. Subsequently named to the Privy Council by the Queen, he was further honored in 1985 by being appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada.

In addition to his outstanding political accomplishments, he has been involved extensively in a range of other activities. Active on the boards of a number of major corporations, he has also provided leadership to the Canadian Alliance for Trade and Job Opportunities, lectured regularly at both this University and the University of Calgary, and served as Honorary Chairman of the 15th Olympic Winter Games Organizing Committee.
