J. Lorne Braithwaite was born in Dewberry, Alberta, where he attended high school prior to earning a B.Comm. from this university in 1963. Always an avid athlete, he was a two-way player for the Golden Bear football team for three seasons, serving as defensive captain and being awarded a Block "A" in his last year. In addition, while an undergraduate, he patrolled the blueline for the highly-rated Junior "A" Edmonton Oil Kings then in the Central Alberta Senior Hockey League. His emerging leadership qualities resulted in being named an alternate captain in his final season with the Oil Kings. Active in student affairs, he was elected president of the Commerce Graduating Class in 1963.

His career in business has spanned a gamut of responsibilities beginning in the T. Eaton Company which he served in Winnipeg Calgary and Vancouver before moving on to senior positions with ATCO Industries in Calgary. Between assignments he enrolled in The University of Western Ontario and earned an M.B.A. in 1969. Later he returned to Eaton's in Edmonton as Regional Sales Manager, before joining the Oxford Development Group as project manager, in 1974. Continuing to gather diversified experience, he served as Senior Vice-President, Development with Oxford from 1976 to 1978. In 1978 Lorne accepted the presidency of Cambridge Leaseholds. At the time of his induction in 1994, he held the position of President and CEO, Cambridge Shopping Centres Limited.

His business acumen has led to appointments to the boards of many Canadian companies. An interest in young people is reflected in his longtime involvement in Junior Achievement, and through volunteer work with minor hockey in the Toronto area not to abandon his own participation, he remains a recreational competitor in squash, golf, and hockey.

Other service to his profession and community has been provided in chairing both the Canadian Committee of I.C.S.C. (The International Council of Shopping Centers) and the Corporate Capital Campaign for the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children in 1986. On an international level, he is a member of the World Presidents' Organization and was active in the Young Presidents' Organization, 1978-1932.

In attending this university Lorne Braithwaite took full advantage of the opportunity to obtain a first-class education combined with an equally high quality career in university football and junior "A" hockey. He has combined that background with consistent effort, clear vision, a willingness to make learning a life-long project, and the love and support of his wife Josie and their four children, Todd, Jodi, Troy and Travis, to forge an outstanding career in Canadian business and to make his profession and the community he lives in better because of his presence.
