Ruby Anderson was born and raised in La Fleche, Saskatchewan. Following high school, she attended Moose Jaw Teachers College and the University of Saskatchewan before contributing to the war effort in a Toronto munitions plant.

Ruby began her teaching career in 1941 in rural Saskatchewan and then continued her education at this University in 1948.

During her two years as a student here, she was an outstanding Panda basketball player. The contributions she made to the team and other aspects of university life were recognized when she was presented in 1950 with the Bakewell Trophy awarded to the female athlete who best combines athletic skill, scholarly ability and a sense of fair play.

Subsequent to her graduation, Ruby taught at Victoria Composite High School where she was an outstanding teacher and coach in basketball, volleyball, softball and track and field. In 1956, she accepted a position in the Department of Physical Education at the University of Alberta. Among her many teaching and administrative duties, she was the Panda basketball coach for nine years. Ruby relinquished this post when appointed Director of Women's Athletics in 1963.
