While at the University of Alberta, Cathy McMillan was an effective basketball player and an outstanding golfer. She was a member of the Panda Basketball team that won the Canadian Junior Basketball Championships in 1968, but it was her golfing accomplishments that gained her recognition across Canada.

Her successes in golf began in 1963 when she won the Canadian Junior Golf Championship and was voted as the Outstanding Provincial Female Athlete of the Year. Cathy then enrolled in Physical Education at this University, and from 1964 to 1969 she was a member of the golf team, and in all but 1964 a member of the Panda basketball team as well.

Her outstanding performances earned her two City of Edmonton Awards during her university years: one for basketball, and the other for golf as a member for the Alberta team.
Cathy graduated with a Bachelor of Physical Education degree in 1967 and was awarded the Bakewell Trophy as the Outstanding Female Athlete the next year. She continued her studies at this University and received a Bachelor of Education degree in 1969.

Cathy continued her athletic career after graduation. She was a member of the Alberta Ladies golf team 14 times, and as a member of the team in 1973 contributed significantly to a Canadian Interprovincial team championship. Since she was expecting the birth of twins in 1975, Cathy turned down the invitation to compete in the Commonwealth Golf Championships.
Her accomplishments in the sport of golf are outstanding and her contribution to university athletics both as a representative and as a competitor are unique at this University.
