Dalton Smarsh is one of the most outstanding running backs in the history of the Golden Bears Football program and a highly esteemed builder of Edmonton school and city sport programs. A native of Edmonton, Dalton attended schools in this city as well as in Loreburn, Saskatchewan where he was introduced to six-man football. On his return to Edmonton he was recruited into the McNally Tigers football program. Upon graduation he joined the Edmonton Wildcats Football program and starred for three years as their outstanding fullback. He was twice named as the team's captain, twice as a league all-star, and in 1970 was selected by the coaches as the league's Most Valuable Player. For five seasons (1972-1976), Dalton played for the Golden Bears where, as a full back, he dominated league play. Current records show that Dalton had the greatest number of carries and scored the most touchdowns in Golden Bear history. For years his team, league and CIAO rushing records have stood as a mark of excellence. Dalton is still listed as the team's all-time leading rusher and his rushing records stand today as the fifth best among all CIAO backfielders.

He starred on the Bears CIALI championship team in 1972, was named team captain for four of his five seasons of play, a league All-Star on four occasions and an All-Canadian in 1974. Dalton twice won the Harry A. Irving trophy when he was named as the team’s most valuable backfielder in 1972 and 1976. The Saskatchewan Roughriders drafted Dalton Smarsh in 1976 and he played in four games for the 'Riders before returning to Edmonton to begin his career as a teacher and a builder of school sport.

Since his move to the school system in Edmonton, this inductee has contributed in many ways to the development of education and sport in this city. He has served the Edmonton Public Schools as a department head of physical education for 15 years and he has coached basketball (Junior High School City Champions in 1980), football (Senior High School City Champions in 1998), track and field (Junior High School Zone Champions five years in a row), volleyball and soccer. Dalton has also coached community league soccer and basketball (1995-2000) and has served as a referee with the Edmonton Football Association for two years.

As a builder of sport, Dalton's contributions extend beyond the school programs. He returned to his football roots when he served as coach for the Edmonton Wildcats for five years, three as an assistant coach and two as head coach. As head coach in 1983, he led the team to a Canadian championship. Recognizing outstanding coaching talent, the University of Alberta recruited Dalton as their offensive coordinator in 1985.

It is with great sense of pride that the name, Dalton Smarsh - superb athlete and outstanding contributor to the building of sport programs - is added to the University Of Alberta Sports Wall Of Fame.
