Routledge Award of Merit from the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association for her outstanding contributions to physical education and high school athletics (1977), and the 1977 Honour Award from the Alberta Health and Physical Education Council.

Born in Wetaskiwin, Marion received her early education in southern Alberta and attended high school at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute. It was in that community that her involvement in the YMCA leadership programs led to her decision to make a career in physical education. At the University of Alberta, she had to major in home economics since physical education had not yet been established here. After completing a B.Ed. degree at this University (1948), she took up graduate work at the University of Washington then returned to Alberta in 1954 for a B.A. and a master's degree in Educational Administration (1965).

In athletic pursuits, Marion could be termed "self-made" as she relied extensively on her natural athletic ability in many sports. In her first year at University, she competed in Varsity track and field and won the gold medal for high jump. During her second year she participated in varsity basketball as well as track and field and was awarded a Major Athletic Award in 1948. Marion was also active in intramurals where she participated in basketball, volleyball and swimming and assisted with the administration as a manager and faculty sports representative as well.

Marion began her professional career as a teacher in Picture Butte and later taught in Bellevue. In 1948 she accepted a position with the Edmonton Public School Board and ten years later moved into an administrative role as Assistant Supervisor of Physical Education. Here her responsibilities included the development of elementary school physical education curricula along with the organization and administration of all interschool competition.

As a teacher, coach and administrator, Marion became a leader among female physical education teachers. She was one of the founders of the Edmonton High School Athletic Association and played a major role in having women included in the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association. As well she was instrumental in the administration of in-service programs for Public School physical education teachers in Edmonton.

Marion has been a member and served in various executive positions with a number of professional organizations, including: the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation; the Alberta Teachers Association; the Canadian College of Teachers; the Delta Kappa Gamma Society; and the Edmonton Public School Administrators' Association.

Her service and outstanding contributions to the field of physical education and sport have been recognized widely. In 1964 she received a ten year service award for her involvement with the Red Cross Swimming program. In May 1972, Marion was presented with an Honour Award by the Edmonton Women's Branch of CAHPER and in 1977 the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association presented her with the R.H. Routledge Award of Merit for her outstanding contributions to physical education and high school athletics. She was also the recipient of the 1977 Honour Award from the Alberta Health and Physical Education Council. The Edmonton Public Local of the A.T.A. made her a life member following her retirement in 1983.
