Ian Newhouse is the University of Alberta's premiere sprint athlete. During his career as a competitive runner he established university, national and world records during his career as a runner and hurdler. Ian competed in both indoor and outdoor meets and established records in virtually every distance he ran. As a member of the University of Alberta Golden Bears Track and Field team from 1978 to 1982 he competed, primarily indoors, in 200m to 800 m sprints, hurdles and relay event. During the outdoor season he focused his energy on the 400m hurdles. The athletic talent of this superb runner was recognized in 1981 when he was awarded the prestigious Dr. Fred Tees Memorial Trophy as the Most Outstanding Track and Field Athlete attending a Canadian University. The following year the University of Alberta publicly applauded Ian Newhouse when he was awarded the Wilson Trophy given to the University's most outstanding Male Athlete.

The outstanding careers of great track and field athletes are forged at national and international meets. It is not surprising then that Ian Newhouse, competed as a member of Canada's national team from 1979 to 1984 and again from 1983 to 1990 competed in two Olympic Games (1980 and 1984), World Championships, Commonwealth, World Student (FEU), Pan American, Pan Pacific, and Francophone Games He is also a former Canadian National Champion in either the 4X400m relay, 400m hurdles, 400rn or 800m sprints every year from 1976 to 1934 and again in 1993. A remarkable record in athletic events where the speed of youth often prevails.

During his career Ian Newhouse established Canadian records for the 400m hurdles, and for indoor distances of 300m, 400rn, 500m, and 600m as well as the World records for the indoor 300m hurdles and the 600m sprint. His outstanding performances were recognized by the Province of Alberta when it named him as a recipient of an Alberta Achievement Award each year from 1976 to 1961. A singular and important recognition was extended to Ian Newhouse when he was invited to deliver the Athlete's Oath at Edmonton's 1983 World Student (HSU) Games in Commonwealth Stadium,

The passing years have scarcely slowed this amazing athlete. Ian continues to compete and won the gold and silver medal for the 800m and 400rn sprints respectively for the 40-45 year age group at the 1997 US Masters Game.

As a builder of sports programs, Ian began his coaching career when he joined the Richmond BC Kajaks Track and Field Club in 1985. When he was appointed to the faculty of Lakehead University he turned his attention to the lack of competitive opportunities for track and field athletes on the campus. In 1988 he founded their Cross Country/Track and Field Program and remained the head coach until 1999.

It is rare to have a world class track and field athlete involved in our track and field athletics program and it is an honour to add the name of Ian Newhouse to the University of Alberta's Sports Wall of Fame.
