In 1959, Irvin Servold was presented the Wilson Trophy, as the Outstanding Male Athlete at the University of Alberta. This was a unique event, since it was the first time the award had been presented to a skier. Irvin Servold was no ordinary skier, however. From the time he entered the University in 1956 until the time he graduated in 1965 with two degrees, he led the University ski team to national prominance.

Originally from Camrose, Alberta, Irvin was instrumental in developing a strong Alberta skiing program as both a competitor and coach. He lead the Alberta team with three intercollegiate cross-country titles in 1958, 1959, and 1961, along with a third place finish in the jumping event in 1958. His greatest competitive accomplishment while at the University of Alberta was being selected to the Canadian Winter Olympic team for the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina, Italy and the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, California. He is regarded most highly for his record in developing downhill skiers into Nordic event competitors which involves both cross-country and jumping.

Irvin Servold has given a lifetime of dedication to his sport. In addition to being an outstanding competitor, winning the Canadian National Championship in the Nordic Combined event eight times from 1955 to 1972, he has represented Canada as a coach, judge, and technical adviser in many international competitions. He was inducted into the Canadian Skiing Hall of Fame in 1985.
