Shona Schleppe is a world-class athlete, a world-class coach and a world-class leader in the world of sport. As an athlete Shona excelled in alpine skiing, field hockey and soccer. It was however, her superior contributions as an athlete and a leader in field hockey and soccer upon which her legendary excellence was built like many young, athletes in Alberta the Rocky Mountain ski slopes proved a powerful attraction to Shona. From an early age she established herself as an excellent alpine skier and she went on to be a member of the Alberta Alpine Ski team from 1978 to 1981.

On her arrival as a student at the University of Alberta, she joined the Panda field hockey program. It proved to be a sport where Shona's athleticism could shine brightly and she starred on the Pandas Hockey field team from 1981 to 1985. In 1985, her outstanding play and team leadership resulted in Shona being named the winner of the Edna Bakewell Trophy - she was the University’s acknowledged outstanding female athlete. After graduation, Shona's stardom as a field hockey player continued to shine brightly. She was selected to represent Canada as a member of the junior team (1984 and 1985) and then advanced to play on the Canadian Senior National Field Hockey team from 1985 to 1998. During her time as a team member, Canada's national squad won the World Cup Field Hockey Bronze Medal in 1986 the Pan American Games Bronze Medal in 1987 and it placed 5th in the Seoul Olympic Games. Shona retired from an active playing career following the 1988 Olympic Games. For eight years Shona represented her University and her nation as one of Canada's finest field hockey players. This would have been an outstanding career for most athletes. But not so for Shona.

Shona was also a superior soccer player. Unfortunately, during the period when Shona was a student at the University, soccer was not funded as a varsity sport. Her soccer talents however, were recognized by the coaches of the Edmonton Angels Soccer Club and from 1991 to 1993 she was a select player on this highly acclaimed team. Her Angels Club won Canadian championships in 1981 and 1982. They also placed 2nd in the 1993 Western Canada Summer Games. Then, in 1989, as Shona was ending her international field hockey playing career, she was named as a member of the Canadian Women's Soccer team. Although a knee injury prevented her playing in the 1989 championships, she played on the 1991 team that won a silver medal at the International CanCaCaf (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Associations of Football) Championships – a championship that, if won, would qualify the team for World Cup Championships.

Shona Shleppe retired as an international athlete in 1989. In the usual Shona Shleppe fashion, she had already begun the transition to another career. In 1989 she was named an assistant coach of the Pandas Field Hockey team a position she held from 1988-1990. She was then reunited to serve as assistant coach with the Panda’s Soccer team. She ably filled this role from 1990 to 1992. In 1991 the Pandas captured the CIAU gold medal.

Shona has continued to provide leadership in the world of sport. Today Shona is a Sport Consultant in the Alberta Community Development Branch of the Alberta Government. Her outstanding skills have resulted in her being named as Alberta's Assistant Chef de Mission for the 1997 Canada Summer Games, Alberta's Chef de Mission for the 1998 and 2000 Artic Winter Games, the 1999 Western Canada Summer Games, and as the Co-Chef de Mission of Alberta's team for the 2002 Arctic Winter Games. Shona Shleppe exemplifies all that Canadians look for in their outstanding athletes, coaches and sport administrators - a high level of motivation, a profound commitment to team spirit, deep dedication to other players and a strong sense of fair play.
