Sports Wall of Fame
• Competed for the Pandas track & field, cross country, and basketball programs.
• Ran the 4 x 400m relay for the Canadian Olympic team at the 1972 Olympics and competed on Canada's national team from 1973 to 1981 in pentathlon and heptathlon.
• Won in both the high jump and the pentathlon competitions at the 1983 Masters World Championships.
• Earned numerous medals in World Masters competitions from 1983 to 1997 and set two indoor World Masters records in the 400m and the high jump.
• Made significant contributions as a coach, sports official and volunteer in the sport of track & field.
A stellar track and field athlete, Liz Mc Blain (BPE 72) has set records at every level of competition: school, city, provincial, national and international. Liz's talents as an athlete extended beyond the world of track and field athletics where she competed as a member of the Pandas from 1969 to 1972 and again in 1984/1985; she was also a member of the Panda cross country and basketball teams during those same three seasons. Prior to enrolling at the University of Alberta, Liz attended the University of Lethbridge where, in 1968 -1969, she was named Athlete of the Year.
In 1972 Liz was selected to compete on the 4x400 meter Canadian Olympic relay team. Extending her outstanding athletic repertoire into the pentathlon and heptathlon events, Liz was named to Canada's national team in these events from 1973 to 1981. Her outstanding athleticism and competitive chive was rewarded in 1983 at the Masters World Championships held in Puerto Rico when Liz won the world championship in both the high jump and the pentathlon, a truly significant accomplishment. Continuing with her athletic career in World Masters competitions Liz amassed an amazing list of gold, silver and bronze medals in the Games held in Italy (1985), Australia (1987), USA (1989), Finland (1991), Japan (1993), Australia (1994) and South Africa (1997). During the decades of the 1980's and 1990's Liz also dominated in her events in both the Canadian and the Pan American Masters competitions. In March, 1988, she set two indoor World Masters records in the 400 meter sprint and the high jump.
From 1973 onward Liz has contributed to the building of sports programs as a teacher and as a coach in the Edmonton/Leduc school systems as well as Quebec and Minnesota. She is a Canadian track and field official and served as a volunteer for the 1978 Commonwealth Games (Edmonton), the 1983 Universiade Games (Edmonton) and the 1993 Universiade Games (Buffalo), the 1991 Goodwill Games (Seattle), the 1996 and 1997 World Firefighter Games (Edmonton and Ca/pry respectively). In 1994 Liz was appointed as the co-meet director for the Masters Pan American.
As an athlete, coach, volunteer, sports official - Liz McBlain has contributed in many ways to the world of athletics. Few University of Alberta athletes have set as many world records in their events as has Liz. She is a credit to her sport, to the world of Masters Competition, and to her University. The University of Alberta welcomes Liz McBlain to the Sports Wall of Fame.
