Pal Power was born in Ottawa in 1905. Less than a year later the Power family moved to Edmonton. Upon graduation from Victoria High School in 1924, Pal enrolled at the University of Alberta. He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1928.
Pal was an outstanding high school athlete. In 1921, he helped Victoria High defeat Calgary in the inaugural provincial high school football championship.
During the 1924 and 1925 seasons, Pal played rugby football for the then amateur Edmonton Eskimos. Playing at the line half position, he was an outstanding two-way player. While playing for the Eskimos in 1925, Pal made history when he caught the first forward pass in Canadian football to result in a touchdown. During the winter months, Pal played hockey for the University of Alberta.
In 1926 and 1927, his last two years of study at the University of Alberta, he played both rugby football and hockey for the University. During his last year, the varsity rugby team played the University of Manitoba in the finals of the new Western Canadian Intercollegiate Rugby Union.
A very versatile hockey player, Pal was equally at home up on the forward line or back on defense. While with the University of Alberta varsity hockey team, he was selected an Edmonton Senior League all-star defenseman on four occasions. In the fall of 1932 he travelled to Europe as part of a hockey tour with the 1932 Edmonton Superiors Senior hockey team. Always a force to be reckoned with in big games, Pal scored the overtime goal to give the Superiors the 1932-33 Alberta Senior title over the Calgary Broncs.
