Miroslava (Mirka) Lindberg (née Pribylova) was an outstanding volleyball player for the Pandas during her stellar competitive career. Originally from the Czech Republic, Pribylova came to Canada in 1992 and played setter for the Pandas from 1994 to 1998. She was the inaugural recipient of the President’s Cup as Pandas Volleyball Most Valuable Player in 1994, which she won again the following year. She also received the Bakewell Trophy in 1996, which honoured her as the University of Alberta’s most outstanding female athlete.
With Mirka running the offence, the Pandas excelled in regional and national competition, winning the Canada West championship three times (1995, 1996 and 1997) and CIAU championships on four occasions (1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998). Although she was a member of some exceptional teams, Mirka was also recognized for her individual excellence during her career. She was named a Canada West First Team All-Star four times - 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998 - and Canada West MVP on three occasions (1996, 1997 and 1998). She was a CIAU First Team All-Canadian four times (1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998), becoming the first U of A Panda in any sport to earn the honour four times. Her outstanding performances at the national level were also recognized when she was named the tournament MVP at the 1995 national championship. She was also a three time national championship tournament All-Star (1996-1998), and she was chosen as the CIAU Player of the Year twice - in 1996 and 1997. The Pandas volleyball teams captured six consecutive CIAU championships between 1995 and 2000, posting an overall won-loss record of 212-36 during that time. This outstanding record was honoured when these teams were inducted into the University’s Sports Wall of Fame in 2008. Those same Pandas volleyball teams were inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
Following her outstanding career with the Pandas, Pribylova played professional volleyball in Europe from 1998 to 2002 - in Switzerland for Geneva Volley, and with SSV Ulm 1846 in Germany. She was a member of the Canadian National Team from 1998 to 2002, and she competed for Canada at the 2002 World Volleyball Championships in Germany. Mirka completed her Bachelor of Physical Education degree at the University of Alberta in 2003.
Since moving to Calgary in 2003, Mirka has served as Assistant Coach for the University of Calgary Dinos Volleyball team, and helped them capture a CIS championship in 2003-04. She has also coached the Dinos Volleyball Club, and she works as a firefighter with the City of Calgary.
Mirka Pribylova was an exceptional performer during the Pandas volleyball dynasty from 1995 to 2000, and she is the first player from those teams to be inducted as an individual athlete into the University of Alberta Sports Wall of Fame.
