Legends are created by individuals, each of whom in their own special way, adds to the tradition. Gerry Braunberger, in many important ways, added to the legend of the Golden Bears Ice Hockey program. From 1964 through to 1970, Gerry played as a forward but primarily on defense for a team that won the national championship (1967-1968), and five Canada West Conference championships. During his Golden Bear hockey career, this Sports Wall of Fame inductee was named to three consecutive Canada West First All-Star teams (1967-1968 to 1969-1970), the CIAU All-tournament team (1967-1968) and is only one of 6 players in Golden Bears hockey history to have served as a team captain for three or more seasons.
Each year the Wilson Challenge Trophy is awarded to the most outstanding male athlete of the University of Alberta. Following the 1968-1969 season Gerry's athletic and leadership excellence was recognized by the University when it named him as the Wilson Trophy winner. Only the best of the best receive such recognition. At the end of that season, the coaches also awarded Gerry the Andy Purcell Hockey Trophy as the Golden Bears Most Valuable Player. Why such acclaim? Gerry Braunberger was an all-around contributor to the team's successes. He was a high scoring defensemen (tied for 4w among all Golden Bear defensemen on the all-time Canada West hockey scoring list with 94 points), a tough but clean defensive player (registering only 11 penalties in his 75 Canada West conference games), and a leader among leaders. Coach Clare Drake recognized his leadership and, at the end of his active career with the team, invited him to join the coaching staff for Gerry's final two years as a student on the campus.
In 1967, the Golden Bears Hockey team was named to represent Alberta in the inaugural Canada Winter Games hosted in Quebec City. Gerry Braunberger was a young assistant captain on that team and helped to lead them to a gold medal based on a 5-1 record during which they outscored their competition 47-17.
After leaving the University of Alberta, Gerry went on to develop a highly successful dental practice in Calgary. He has played and coached in a number of hockey leagues, developed his golf game to the point where he has played in the Alberta Amateur and Open championships, served on a wide range of committees for the provincial and national Dental associations and has been named a Fellow in the Pierre Fauchard Academy as well as the International College of Dentists (two honorary dental organizations for dentists who have contributed to the art and science of dentistry).
The legend of Golden Bear Ice Hockey has been built by great leaders and athletes. Gerry Braunberger lists high among them and the University is proud to add his name to the Sports Wall of Fame.
