Dick Wintermute (BPE '63; BEd '65; MSc 74 U Oregon) was a players' player — a truly great athlete and a superb team player. During his eleven years at the University of Alberta as a student-athlete and as an assistant coach, he was a member of three CIAU national championship teams (two in hockey; one in football) and eleven Canada West championship teams (seven in hockey; four in football). A standout two-sport star, he played five seasons on the blueline for the Golden Beam hockey team (1960-1961 to 1964-1965) and three seasons as an offensive center for the football team (1962 to 1964). His outstanding play gained him the respect of players, coaches and the sport media which led to national and conference honours in both sports. In hockey, he was named to the 1963-1964 CIAU University Cup All-Tournament team and to the Canada West first All-Star team in 1961-1962; 1963-64 and the second All-Star team in 1962-63;1964-65. In football, Dick was named to the 1964 CIAU All-Canadian team by Intercollegiate Athletic News. The Western Canadian Intercollegiate Football League named Dick to their All-Star team in both 1963 and 1964.
During the 1963-1964 academic year, Dick was named as the co-winner of the Wilson Challenge Trophy, an honour extended to the athlete at the University of Alberta. He also won, the Frank Morris Trophy in 1964 as the Golden Bears Outstanding Lineman. Coaches and teammates alike recognized his outstanding leadership. He captained the Golden Bears hockey team in 1963-1964 and 1964-1965 and was named as assistant captain of the football team in 1963 as well as 1964.
Dick was also a builder of our sports programs. He served as an assistant coach of the Golden Bears hockey team from 1969-1970 through to 19741975. During his tenure, the team compiled a.676 overall winning record, a .742 Canada West record and a .682 record against inter-university on their way to winning the CIAU University Cup championship and four Canada opponents titles.
Over the years, Dick also coached minor hockey in the community, served as an assistant coach of the 1965 Edmonton Huskies national junior football championship finalists, and was named the head coach of the Queen Elizabeth Knights High School football team for ten seasons. In 1969 the Knights won the city championship. He has served as a director of the Edmonton Amateur Wrestling Association, the Alberta Amateur Football Association, the Kinsmen Club of Sherwood Park and Sport Central. Dick has performed many roles with Sport Central (an organization dedicated to assisting the "Kid in Sport"). His commitment to sport and to young athletes continues unabated. Dick Wintermute is dearly a wonderful representative of the University of Alberta and its athletic alumni. We are proud to add his name to the University Of Alberta Sports Wall Of Fame.
