Simply put, Doug Baker is one of the greatest players in Golden Bears basketball history. In his three seasons on the hard-court for the Bears, from 1974 to 1977, he played two years as team captain, and won the Wardlaw Porteous Trophy as the team’s most valuable player every season.

He was also a three-time Canada West conference all-star, and in 1977 he was named a first team CIAU all-Canadian. He graduated with five Golden Bears records to his name - career scoring average (18.4), career field goals attempted (1,091), single season scoring average (24.2), single season field goals made (209), and single season field goals attempted (427), and still holds two of them, field goals made and field goals attempted, at the time of his Sports Wall of Fame induction (2018). What’s even more impressive about his totals and records, is that he established his scoring legacy in an era of basketball that didn’t have a three-point line.

After his stellar career at the U of A, Doug went on to play two years of professional basketball in Belgium, before returning to the U of A to complete his Bachelor of Physical Education, which he earned in 1980. He dedicated himself to the sport of basketball in the Edmonton community, playing 25 years of senior men’s basketball, and spending 30 years of his time as a volunteer and professional coach, where he worked with thousands of students of all ages and genders. He also returned to the Golden Bears and Pandas basketball programs, coaching with the Pandas basketball team from 1991 to 1996.

Doug and his family have a strong connection to the Edmonton basketball community, as well as a legacy of basketball excellence in Canada. Both Doug and his wife Trix are now members on the University of Alberta Sports Wall of Fame, while their son Jordan graduated from the Golden Bears basketball program with seven Golden Bears basketball records and went on to play with Team Canada.

From his days as one of the best offensive weapons in Golden Bears basketball history, to his three decades of growing the sport of basketball as a dedicated coach and mentor in the Edmonton area, Doug Baker is a sterling addition to the University of Alberta Sports Wall of Fame.
