• The leading scorer for three consecutive Western Intercollegiate Championship Golden Bears hockey teams.
• Following service in World War II, he returned to Edmonton and played for two years with the Edmonton Flyers of the Western Canada Hockey League.
• Played with the Edmonton Waterloo Mercurys in 1950 when they earned the gold medal at the World Championships in London, England, winning all eight games they played in the tournament and outscoring their opposition 88 goals to 5.
• Inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame & Museum in 2011 as a member of the Edmonton Waterloo Mercurys.
• Founded Stanley Associates Engineering Ltd. in 1954 and served on the University of Alberta Board Of Governors and as president of the University of Alberta Alumni Association.

Don Stanley was born and raised in Edmonton. He attended Eastwood High School and graduated from the University of Alberta in 1940 obtaining a B.Sc. in civil engineering with distinction.

In high school he played basketball, soccer, baseball and hockey. In 1937 he led the Edmonton Rangers to the Alberta Junior Hockey Championship and to Western Memorial Cup playoffs in Saskatoon.

At University, Don played intercollegiate hockey, football, and soccer. He also competed in intramural basketball and swimming. He was a kicker for the football team and was one of the last players to drop kick for field goals. His major athletic accomplishments were performed on the ice where he was a leading scorer for three consecutive Western Intercollegiate Championship hockey teams.

Don spent four years in the Royal Canadian Air Force where he played inter-service hockey with many top National Hockey League stars. In 1945, Don returned to Edmonton where he played for two years with the Edmonton Flyers of the Western Canada Hockey League. In 1949, he was flown to Europe to bolster the Sudbury Wolves, Canada's representative at the World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden where he was considered to be the outstanding player of the tournament. The following year he played with the Edmonton Mercuries where they won the gold medal at the World Championships in London, England. Although Don's father is in the Hockey Hall of Fame he was encouraged to follow an alternate career path.

In 1946, Don became Director of Environmental Engineering for the Government of Alberta. During this period, he continued his education on a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship and received both master's (1948) and doctoral (1952) degrees in environmental engineering from Harvard University.

Throughout his professional career, Dr. Stanley has received numerous honors and awards. In 1954 he founded his own consulting engineering practice which has since developed into a major engineering firm, Stanley Associates Engineering Ltd., providing multidisciplinary services in Canada, the United States and overseas. Don was married in 1960 to Joan Bibby and they have raised three children.

Don Stanley has published a number of major technical papers and served on several boards and community related organizations. He is a Past President of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Chamber. Among his many other involvements have been the following: Board of Directors, Alberta Research Council: Federal Government, Construction Industry Development Council; Expert Advisory Panel on Environmental Health of the World Health Organization; University of Alberta Board of Governors and President, University of Alberta Alumni Association.

Like other inductees to the Wall of Fame, Dr. Stanley is an example of a student who combined academic excellence with high performance in a number of athletic programs at his University. These experiences influenced the development of a broad range of skills that, combined with his own initiative, helped him make outstanding contributions to his profession and community.
