From 1977-78 to 1979-80, the Golden Bears captured three straight University Cup championships, adding Canada West titles in 1977-78 and 1978-79 while posting conference records of 20-4-0, 20-4-0, and 20-9-0. Led by captains Kevin Primeau, John Devaney, Randy Gregg, and Larry Riggan, the Bears dominated nationally by outscoring University Cup opponents by a combined 48-17 over the three tournaments. Primeau, David Hindmarch, and Chris Helland earned University Cup MVP honours, while Randy Gregg won the Senator Joseph A. Sullivan Player of the Year award in 1979. The era also featured numerous major individual accolades, including CIAU All-Canadian selections for Ted Poplawski, Randy Gregg, Chris Nelland/Helland, and multiple Canada West All-Star honours for standouts such as Primeau, Gregg, Don Spring, Dave Breakwell, Devaney, Hindmarch, Poplawski, Larry Riggan, and Bruce Rolin.
