An athlete and a builder of athletic programs, Tracy David has left an indelible mark on the campus of the University of Alberta. Tracy was appointed assistant head coach of the Pandas Soccer Team in 1984 and head coach in 1985. Over the course of the next 16 years she directed her squads of Pandas to 6 Canada West Championships, 2 CIAU/CIS national gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals. Overall her 16 year record as the Pandas’ Head Coach stands at 142 wins/48 losses/44 ties. A remarkable accomplishment! In recognition, she was named the CIAU Soccer Coach of the Year (1989) and the Canada West Conference conferred on her this same recognition of excellence on 4 occasions. Her Faculty peers also appreciated her outstanding talents when, in 1997, she won their Coach of the Year award.
Tracy actively extended her contributions to soccer by accepting coaching challenges at the provincial level. From 1985 to 1988 she coached Alberta’s Under 16 (U-16) Girls teams at the Arctic Winter Games and in Canadian championships. Her U-16 team won the Rocky Mountain Cup (RMC) gold medal in 1992, her U-15 team an RMC gold medal in 1998. In 1995 her U-23 team won the gold medal at Western Canada Games. Under Tracy’s leadership, Alberta’s U-17 Girls’ Team won the silver medal in the 2000 National All-Star Championships. Little wonder that Canada’s National Coaching School for Women appointed her as an instructor over the period 1990 to 1994. While studying for her Masters degree at the University of Victoria, Tracy was offered a position as assistant head coach of the UVic Vikes Mens’s Soccer team (2001). The next year she was appointed as the head coach of the UVic Vikes Women’s Soccer team, a position she continues to hold. BC, not to be outdone by Alberta, recruited Tracy to coach their U-17 Girls team and she led them to a silver medal in the 2002 National All-Star Championships. In 2005, Tracy coached the BC U-18 team to a gold medal at the Canada Games. From 2001 to 2004 she also served as assistant coach for the National Youth (U-16) team. As significant as her role as a coach has been Tracy David’s career as a player is equally outstanding.
A member of the first ever Pandas soccer team in 1983 Tracy also starred on and captained (for 8 seasons) the Edmonton Angels who, in the 1980 to 1990 era, won six national championships. Five of these the Angels won consecutively – a true dynasty. In 1985 Tracy was recruited to the Edmonton Fergies to play in the World Masters Games. Her team won the gold medal!! Her playing skills gained her promotion to Canada’s national team (1986-1990) and she completed her playing career as the captain of the Edmonton International Azzure Soccer team (1990-1997) during which time her team won 2 bronze medals at the national championships. Her talents on the soccer pitch were recognized in 2003 when she was inducted into the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame.
Tracy joined the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation in 1985 as the Coordinator of the Women’s Intramural Program (1984-2000). A very capable administrator, as she built outstanding intramural programs, she also coordinated the U of A’s Sports Clubs Program, (5 years), taught in the BPE degree program, edited the newly created Campus Recreation Catalogue, and supervised all non-credit instruction courses offered by Campus Recreation. While fulfilling these responsibilities, her abiding love of soccer drew her to the challenge of directing the University of Alberta’s Annual Golden Bears and Pandas High School Soccer Tournament (1985-2000). Despite her heavy campus roles, Tracy David continued her commitment to sport off campus. She served as President of the CIAU’s Women’s Soccer Coaches Association (1987-1995; 2002-2005) and for 9 years as a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sports and Physical Activity. Tracy was a talented builder who, in every area of responsibility, performed superlatively.
Tracy David’s deep well of devotion to the game of soccer has benefited thousands of young athletes. As a skillful player, as a coach who related exceptionally well to players on and off the field, as a dedicated teacher, as an insightful scout, and as a devoted administrator Tracy has made a difference in the lives of many athletes and students. The University of Alberta honours itself in honouring this outstanding athlete and builder.
