• Member of national champion Bears team (1972) and named a football All-Canadian (1974 and 1975).
• Awarded the Hec Creighton Trophy as the Most Valuable Canadian Varsity Football Player (1975).
• Awarded the Wilson Challenge Trophy as the University's most outstanding male athlete (1975-76).
• The first Canadian university-trained football player selected in the US National Football League draft, picked in the fifth round by the Washington Redskins (1976).
• Member of the Edmonton Eskimos football team that won five consecutive Grey Cups (1978-82).
Brian Fryer, an Edmonton native, is remembered not only as a professional football player but as one of the best college football players in Canada. As a high school athlete at Strathcona Composite High School he held the Canadian High School record for hurdles and set several city and provincial records in long jump and triple jump events. Graduating from Strathcona in 1971, he played for the Edmonton Huskies of the Prairie Junior Football Conference helping them to the Western Championship.
In 1972 he entered the University of Alberta and immediately became a standout with the Golden Bear football team. In his time with the Bears he was named All-Canadian in 1974 and 1975 and was awarded the Hec Creighton Trophy as the Most Valuable Canadian Varsity Football Player in 1975. In 1975-76 he was awarded the Wilson Challenge Trophy as the Most Outstanding Male Athlete at the University of Alberta.
Following graduation from the University of Alberta in 1976 with a Bachelor of Physical Education degree, Brian became the first Canadian university trained football player to be selected in the United States National Football League draft. He was picked in the fifth round by the Washington Redskins.
