Ethel Cuts was the University of Alberta's premier track athlete of the late 1920's. She set several records including a long-standing record for the 220 yard event which was eventually broken by one of her students.

Born in England, Ethel came to Canada at an early age. She entered the University of Alberta in the 1927-28 term and immediately became involved in several sports. In her three years as an undergraduate in the Bachelor of Science degree program, she was a standout member of both the women's basketball and track teams. The crowning achievement to her athletic career at the University of Alberta was being awarded the Bakewell Trophy in 1929. At that time the Bakewell Trophy was given to the woman receiving the highest number of points in intercollegiate competition.

After graduation in 1930, she returned to the University of Alberta to obtain her teaching certificate. She then entered the teaching profession where she began to share her expertise in sports as a coach in addition to her other teaching duties. For a number of years she worked as a supervisor of the Edmonton Public School physical education programs. Upon retirement, Ethel became a valued volunteer in provincial activities for senior citizens.
