EDMONTON – The 2021 UofA Invitational was dominated by schools from B.C., as the Fraser Valley Cascade Men, and UBC Okanagan Heat Women captured their respective team titles, Monday afternoon at Northern Bear Golf Course.
Powered by a sparkling 69-72 from individual champion Jackson Jacob, the UFV Cascades claimed the men's team title with a final combined score of 19 over par. The Manitoba Bisons, thanks to a stellar second round team score of two over, finished second at +21. The UBC Okanagan men placed third at +22.
Jacob claimed the men's individual title by four shots over Manitoba's Cole Peters.
On the women's side, the Heat utterly dominated at the Jack Nicklaus-designed course, winning the team title by 51 shots. Leading the Heat to victory was Kendra Jones-Munk (T-1
st), Kayleigh Trowman (3
rd), and Rebecca Reitsma (6
th), with all five UBCO women finishing in the top 10 overall.
Jones-Munk finished in a tie with Calgary Dino Victoria Tse for the overall women's individual crown, as the pair finished with a total gross score of 159 (+15).
The host Golden Bears placed fifth overall on the men's side at +46, while the Pandas slotted in at third, behind the Calgary Dinos, and ahead of the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
Madison Willan was the highest finisher of any Golden Bear or Panda, as the dual-sport athlete finished fourth in the women's competition, three shots behind the winners with a 77-85 (162).
Most schools competing this weekend will now travel to Lethbridge, as the Pronghorns host their annual competition on September 18
th and 19
th at Paradise Canyon.
The 2021 Canada West Championship, hosted by the UBC Thunderbirds, is set for October 3
rd to 5
th at the Squamish Valley Golf Course.
