LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – Kai Baerg jarred a dramatic eagle on his final hole of the tournament to win the 2026 Canada West Men's Individual Championship by one stroke on Tuesday at Paradise Canyon Golf Resort, becoming the first Golden Bear in program history to capture the conference's individual crown.

Baerg came to the ninth hole — his closing hole of the day — trailing by a single shot. He needed something special, and he got it: an approach from 120 yards that landed three feet beyond the hole, spinning back into the cup for an eagle two, flipping a one-shot deficit into a one-shot victory in the span of a single swing.

He finished at six-under over 36 holes, one shot better than Victoria's Owen Croft, who fired a five-under 66 on Tuesday. Croft bogeyed his final hole, opening the door for the Baerg dramatics. UBC's Aneesh Kaura (-4) rounded out the individual podium.

Baerg's win capped a tournament built on two rounds in the 60s, a 69 followed by a 67. The third-year Bear recorded just a single bogey and single double bogey over 36 holes, adding seven birdies and the walk-off eagle.

The individual title was the headline, but it came inside a milestone team showing for Alberta as well. The Golden Bears finished fourth as a team with a 36-hole score of 20-over 588, the program's best-ever finish at the Canada West Championship. UBC took the team banner at 2-over 570, with UBC Okanagan (578) and Victoria (582) rounding out the top three. The top-five finish also locks in an automatic berth for the Golden Bears to the 2027 Golf Canada University National Championship next summer, a significant addition to the program's resume alongside Baerg's individual breakthrough.

Rhees Moss and Seth Mottershead-Yee both finished tied for 20th at 150 (+8), giving Alberta three golfers inside the top 20 and providing the depth that pushed the team to its historic finish. Nate Ergezinger added a tie for 27th at 153 (+11), and Jaxon Kotylak rounded out the Golden Bears' five counters in a tie for 40th at 161 (+19).

On the women's side, the Pandas turned in a program-best performance of their own, finishing fourth as a team with a score of 487 — their best-ever result at the Canada West Championship and 17 strokes clear of provincial rival Calgary, who finished fifth. UBC ran away with the women's team title at 9-over 435, well clear of UBC Okanagan (455) and Victoria (471).

Kalee Seto led the way for Alberta individually, tying for 10th overall at 16-over 158 across her two rounds. Amy Smith wasn't far behind, tying for 12th at 161. Hayden Desmarais carded a 20th-place finish at 170, and Sam Speck rounded out Alberta's scoring five in a tie for 25th at 175.
