Earning gold in her first competition this season, fifth-year Pandas sprinter has been named the Sherlock Holmes Athlete of the Week.Â
Opening the 2023 indoor season at the University of Washington, Kluyts captured gold in the women's 60m hurdles, posting a time of 8.28 seconds. The Paul Kane high school graduate finished first in the heats with a time of 8.31 seconds, before besting that number in the race final.Â
Her time of 8.28 seconds is just shy of her personal best and Pandas program record of 8.21 seconds, which she posted at the 2022 U SPORTS Championship last March. Her time in Washington also auto-qualified Kluyts, the reigning national champion, for the 2023 U SPORTS Championship in Saskatoon.Â
The veteran Pandas sprinter is coming off a remarkable season, in which she was named both the Canada West Female Track Athlete of the Year, and the UAlberta Female Athlete of the Year.Â
Kluyts and the rest of the Golden Bears and Pandas will be at home this weekend, as the 50th Annual Golden Bears Open is scheduled for Friday and Saturday in the UofA's Butterdome. The 60m hurdle heats are scheduled for 4:00 pm on Friday night, with the final running at 6:00 pm.Â
