A pair of long-standing Golden Bears records fell on Saturday, as
Nick Cook and
Ron MacLean each set new benchmarks at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University.Â
Cook set a new program record in the 1000m with a time of 2:22.98, besting the previous record of 2:23.66 set by Jaden Ostapowich in 2011. Following his tremendous run, Cook now ranks fourth in Canada in the 1000m, and second among all Canada West athletes. Cook's time placed him fourth in Boston.Â
MacLean set a new Bears record in the 3000m, breaking the previous record by four seconds. MacLean finished the event in Boston with a time of 8:08.26, besting the previous record of 8:12.72 set by Kieran McDonald in 2018. MacLean ranks 8th nationally in the 3000m, and first among Canada West runners.Â
8th Annual Pandas Open
- The Golden Bears captured their second tournament title in as many events at home, winning the 8th Annual Pandas Open.Â
- The Bears were led by gold medals from Connor Bole (600m), Tegra Jan-King (triple jump), and their 4x400m relay team.Â
- Jan-King's jump of 15.01m sets a new personal best, and is the fourth longest jump in school history. Jan-King now ranks 4th in Canada with a jump of 15.01m, and second among Canada West athletes.Â
- Rachel Grenke captured her third gold medal of the season, winning the women's pole vault with a jump of 3.88m.
- The Bears swept the podium in the 1000m, with Jason Ushko placing first, Matthew Wafer second, Leif Pougnet third, and Tyler Sharpe fourth.Â
- After setting a new personal best in the event the week prior, Josh Li earned a third-place finish in the 300m with a time of 34.44.Â
- Priscilla Boakye earned a bronze for the Pandas, placing third in the weight throw with a distance of 14.28m.Â
- The 2024 Canada West Championship is scheduled for February 23rd to 25th in the Universiade Pavilion.Â
