The Golden Bears and Pandas opened their 2024 season this past weekend, with their roster split between Saskatoon and Seattle.Â
Washington Huskies Preview - Seattle
- Ron Maclean came within three seconds of setting a new Bears record in the 3000m, placing 23rd in Seattle with a time of 8:15.83. He now owns the 2nd and 5th fastest 3000m runs in Bears history.Â
- Justin Rose placed third in the 60m hurdles. His time of 8.28 seconds is the fourth fastest in Bears history. Rose also placed third in the 400m with a time of 48.32.Â
- Evan Essapa placed 5th in a pair of events, narrowly missing the podium in the 60m and the 200m.Â
Sanderson Classic - Saskatoon
- First-year Panda Rachel Grenke picked up the lone gold medal on Day 1 of the Sanderson Classic in Saskatoon.
- The rookie earned gold in the women's pole vault, clearing 4.05M. Her successful jump is the fourth-highest ever jump by a Panda in program history, and just seven centimeters short of the record.Â
- Priscilla Boakye placed second in the women's weight throw, with her throw of 15.28m placing her inside the top 8 in the nation this season. After the Pandas led the way on Friday in Saskatoon, the Bears took over on Saturday. Tegra Jan-King placed second in the high jump, qualifying for the U SPORTS Championship with a jump of 2.05m.Â
- Wesley Eze placed 2nd in the weight throw with a personal best throw of 17.45m.Â
The 51st Annual Golden Bears Open is scheduled for next weekend in the UofA Butterdome.Â
