CALGARY, AB - After 22 events on each side and three days in the pool, the University of Calgary Dinos men and the UBC Thunderbirds women were crowned the 2023 Canada West Swimming Champions Sunday afternoon inside the UCalgary Aquatic Centre.
Â
The Dinos men finished the meet with 970 points. UBC placed second with 733 points and Alberta was third at 529.
Â
On the women's side, a strong finish just pushed the T-Birds over the century mark with 1000.5 points. The Calgary women came in second at 857.5, while Alberta just held off a late charge from Victoria for third with 334.5 points to the Vikes 333.
Â
The championship is the second in a row for the Dinos men and their 22
nd in program history – now the most in conference history. Meanwhile, the UBC women claim their 13
th banner in the last 14 years.
Adding five more medals on Sunday — including two golds — the Golden Bears secured third place at the 2023 Canada West Championship in Calgary. It marks the highest finish for the Bears at the conference championship since a team bronze in 2016. In total, the Bears earned 11 of the 12 medals captured by UofA athletes.Â
Jack Hayhoe (200m butterfly) and
Fred Kamminga (200m breaststroke) earned individual gold on Sunday, to go along with a bronze from
Diego Paz in the 200m butterfly, and a bronze in the 4x100m medley courtesy of Hayhoe, Kamminga,
Kier Przyswitt, and
Minh Nguyen.Â
After falling to fourth following Saturday's competition, the Alberta Pandas jumped back atop Victoria to finish third overall. Despite not earning an individual medal on Sunday, the Pandas earned 144.5 team points, beating Victoria for the team bronze by 1.5 points.Â
It is the first team podium finish for the Pandas since 2018, and the first time both the Bears and Pandas have finished in the top three since 2016.Â
