VANCOUVER - Finishing with seven total medals and four new program records, the Golden Bears earning their second-straight bronze medal finish at the Canada West Championship. The Bears entered Sunday trailing Victoria by 32.5 for third placing, outscoring the Vikes 271.5-216.5 on the final day.Â
Despite being held off the podium over the three-day meet, the Pandas were able to place fourth at the Canada West Championship in Vancouver. It's the second-straight top-four placing for the Pandas, who earned a team bronze in 2023.Â
The UBC Thunderbirds delivered a dominant performance, sweeping the team banners and claiming every individual award at the UBC Aquatic Centre. The Thunderbirds broke 12 Canada West records, with the UBC women winning their 14th CW title in 15 years, and the men winning their first since 2021.Â
Fifth-year transfer Paul McKenzie led the Alberta contingent, himself contributing three individual and two relay medals, while setting three Bears team records. McKenzie set new marks in the 200m free (1:48.12) and 4x100m freestyle relay (3:20.80) on Saturday, adding a new record in the 400m freestyle on Sunday. McKenzie's time of 3:50.32 in the 400m free earned him a silver medal, and broke a 36-year old Golden Bears record. McKenzie also earned a silver in the 1500m freestyle and 4x100m medley relay.Â
Joining McKenzie on the record-setting 4x100m freestyle relay team was Minh Nguyen, Jaden Debreuijn, and Jac Hayhoe.Â
Hayhoe added a gold medal for the Bears on Sunday in the men's 200m butterfly, setting a new program record with a time of 1:58.98. The previous record of 1:59.32 was set in 2009. Garrett Brendzan earned the third Bears gold, winning the 50m breaststroke on Friday night.Â
Shayne Bowie led the Pandas with a fourth place finish in the 400m freestyle on Sunday with a time of 4:21.08. Gabby Dunn (800m freestyle),
Annika Cameron (50m fly), the 4x200m freestyle relay team, and
Olivia Brendzan (400m IM) all earned fourth place finishes over the weekend.Â
