Bears & Pandas each place 5th at Canada West Championship

Diego Paz, Fred Kamminga add medals on Sunday

The Calgary Dino men, and UBC Thunderbirds women were crowned Canada West Champions, Sunday afternoon in Lethbridge.

The win for the UBC women was their 12th conference title in 13 seasons, and 32nd conference banner overall. Despite outstanding performances highlighted by two Canada West records and a 14-medal haul, the Dinos women couldn't hold off the Thunderbirds to defend their title, settling for the team silver

The Calgary men secured their first championship since 2012, ending UBC's consecutive title streak at 8. Calgary and UBC are now tied with 21 titles each, the most in Canada West men's swimming history.

The Golden Bears and Pandas each finished 5th, with both UAlberta teams finishing within 9 points of 4th. In total, the Bears and Pandas combined to capture five medals, including three silver and two bronze. First-year Panda Kamryn Leslie captured the lone medal on Saturday, earning a bronze in the 200m backstroke.

The Bears picked up three more medals on Sunday, led once again by second-year Diego Paz. Paz earned a silver in the 200m butterfly, before adding a bronze in the 400m freestyle. Fred Kamminga also added a silver in the 200m breaststroke.
