Pandas alumna Kelsey Mitchell wins Olympic Gold in women's sprint

Mitchell competed with the Pandas Soccer team from 2012-14

Pandas Soccer alumna Kelsey Mitchell capped off an incredible Tokyo Olympics for Canada, capturing the Gold Medal in the Women's track cycling sprint competition.

Mitchell defeated World Champion Amma Hinze (Germany) in the sprint semifinal, before dispatching Ukraine's Olena Starikova in the final to become the Olympic Champion. Tokyo 2020 was Mitchell's first Olympic Games appearance.

The Sherwood Park, Alberta native competed with the Pandas Soccer team from 2012-14, helping the Pandas capture the 2013 Canada West Championship, and 2013 CIS bronze medal.

She also competed collegiately for the NAIT Ooks women's soccer program, earning her degree from NAIT in 2016.

Mitchell's medal marks the first cycling gold medal since Lori-Ann Muenzer won the event at the Athens Games in 2004. Mitchell took up the sport in 2017 through the RBC Training Ground program and quickly rose through the ranks, eventually winning the 2019 Pan American Games and becoming a World Record holder in her pursuit to making the Tokyo 2020 Olympic team.
