EDMONTON – MacEwan struck less than a minute into the match and added two more goals in the second half to beat the University of Alberta Pandas 3-0 on Saturday at Foote Field, sending Alberta to its fourth loss of the season.
Sophie Lavallee opened the scoring just 59 seconds in, finishing off an assist from Lillie Pearson to put the Griffins ahead before the game was a minute old. Alberta battled to find an equalizer through the rest of the first half but couldn't beat MacEwan goalkeeper Sabrina Alexander, who finished with six saves for the shutout. MacEwan put the result out of reach in the second half, with Amelia Russo scoring in the 58th minute off a header, and Pearson adding her fourth of the season off another Griffins set piece in the 63rd, both set up by Ivy Kunn.
Despite the scoreline, Alberta actually out-shot MacEwan 14-13 and came agonizingly close to getting on the board late, with
Kaitlyn Roque ringing a shot off the post in the 89th minute.
Erin Hope led the Pandas with four shots, and goalkeeper
Tessa Borrelli made four saves in net. Ivy Kunn's two assists paced MacEwan, while Amelia Russo and Lillie Pearson each finished with a goal and an assist on the day.
The loss drops Alberta to 1-4-0 on the season, while MacEwan improves to 2-3-0.
The two teams will meet again Sunday, Sept. 20, at 6 p.m., with Alberta traveling to face MacEwan.
