Box Score Friday, September 2, 20117:00 PMSaskatoon, UofS - Griffiths StadiumBox Score Score1234FinalGolden Bears00707UofS Huskies3217738 AB TD: Jeremy Bell Another stunning comeback simply wasn’t in the cards for the University of Alberta Golden Bears football team, as they dropped a 38-7 decision to the No. 5 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies, Friday night in Saskatoon. The Golden Bears’ offence had trouble connecting against the veteran Huskies defence, and entered the game missing two starting offensive linemen. The unit managed 217 yards of offence, including 158 through the air, and did not yield a sack, but couldn’t find pay dirt when it mattered most.Alberta defensive back Jeremy Bell scored the Evergreen and Gold’s lone touchdown, returning a fumble 40 yards for a third quarter score. However, by that point the Huskies had put up 24 points, leaving Alberta in another deep gopher hole.Unfortunately for this U of A squad, there would be no climbing out of the abyss as Saskatchewan was able to close out the game, and pick up their ninth home opening win since 2002.The Bears, now 0-1 to start the 2011 season, were returning to Griffiths Stadium for the first time since their shocking 31-30 playoff victory last season, a game in which they scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to advance to the Hardy Cup game.Saskatchewan started the scoring in the first quarter of tonight’s game, by driving a 21-yard field goal through the uprights five and half minutes in.Although neither team had much going through the opening 10 minutes, the Huskies found their groove in the second quarter, scoring 21 straight points, including a pair of touchdowns from inside Alberta’s 5-yard line, to take control of the game by halftime.Jeff Stead’s crew got on the scoreboard early in the third quarter when Bell forced a fumble, recovered it, and rumbled 40-yards for the major just 1:09 into the second half.Alberta managed to hold the Dawgs at bay for the most of the second half, but the dam burst on special teams at 13:54 of the third quarter when Luke Thiel returned an Alberta punt 60-yards for the killing blow. The Huskies added another touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to complete the scoring. The Golden Bear defence did an admirable job, recording three interceptions, a fumble recovery touchdown, and a sack. Sophomore linebacker Tyler Greenslade recorded nine tackles, and one interception to lead the Golden Bears defence, while fourth-year line backer Duncan Morris also had nine tackles, as a well as the team’s lone sack. Fifth-year defensive back Jason Hetherington, along with fellow DB Chad Kaminski, recorded an interception. The Golden Bears (0-1) return to Edmonton to host the Manitoba Bisons (0-0) in their home opener on September 10 at 7:00 pm MT at Foote Field.
