Golden Bears fall to Dinos in final game of 2026 campaign

EDMONTON – The Golden Bears' (1-7) season came to an end on Saturday, as they were defeated 34-19 by the Calgary Dinos (3-5).

Calgary quarterback David Jordan was launching deep balls all game, finishing with 322 passing yards and two touchdowns on just 11 completions. Evan Smith passed the century mark as a rusher, also tallying a pair of touchdowns.

Christian Veilleux threw for 245 yards through the air while gaining 21 on the ground. His lone touchdown pass was caught by Ayden McDonald on a 60-yard bomb that hit the receiver in stride after he beat his man down the sideline.

That highlight came less than five minutes into the game, with McDonald's second major of the season opening the scoring to the cheers of the crowd at Foote Field. The Dinos struck right back, however, driving down the field for a 91-yard drive that culminated in a rushing score for Smith.

Late in the first quarter, the Golden Bears pinned the Dinos inside their own 10-yard line following a good punt and an even better tackle on the return by Carter McLean. Unable to move the ball out from the shadow of their own end zone, the Dinos elected to give up a safety at the beginning of the second.

Unfortunately, the Dinos offence truly came alive shortly thereafter, scoring 17 unanswered points before halftime. That barrage included a pair of long touchdown grabs by Matt Sibley, as well as an Ira Hozack field goal. A rouge in favour of the Golden Bears made it 24-10 at the break.

Neither side could establish real offensive momentum in the second half, although Smith managed to score his second TD of the day late in the third. Eli Hetlinger, playing in his final career game for the Bears, ran in a one-yard score in the fourth that proved to be the final touchdown for either team.

Both the Golden Bears and Dinos will now turn their attention to the offseason and preparing for 2027, following the honouring of this year's graduating senior class.
