Huskies kick walk-off field goal to edge Golden Bears

SASKATOON – Trailing 19-12 after three quarters, the No. 3-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies scored nine unanswered points in the fourth, capped by a 41-yard James Keane field goal as time expired, to beat the University of Alberta Golden Bears 21-19 on Friday night.

Alberta had the ball in Saskatchewan territory in the final minute but couldn't convert a third-and-short at the Saskatchewan 42 that would have iced the game. The Huskies took over and drove 34 yards in 29 seconds to set up Keane's winner.

The Golden Bears held Saskatchewan to 320 yards of offence and spent much of the night in front, scoring seven points in the first quarter on a Charlie Wiersma field goal and two safeties. Saskatchewan answered in the second quarter with a nine-yard Kayden Miller touchdown run, a safety and a single point, and led 10-7 at the half. Alberta took the lead in the third quarter when Christian Veilleux hit Jack Dumont on an eight-yard touchdown pass, then added a safety and a Wiersma field goal to go up 19-12. Keane answered with field goals of 32 and 25 yards in the fourth before his game-winner.

Rookie running back Sirani Brown led the Golden Bears in his first career start, carrying 21 times for 94 yards. Veilleux finished 11-for-25 for 119 yards and the touchdown, and Wiersma was a perfect 2-for-2 on field goals. Miller rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown for Saskatchewan, and Keane connected on three of four field-goal attempts.

The loss drops Alberta to 1-6 on the season, while Saskatchewan improves to 6-1.

The Golden Bears will close out the 2026 season on Halloween, hosting the Calgary Dinos on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 3 p.m. Tickets are available at bearsandpandas.ca/tickets.

Saskatchewan will travel to face the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday, Oct. 30.
