EDMONTON -Â The Golden Bears have opened their 2026 Canada West season in top form, following up a 3-0 win over Calgary by besting the U SPORTS #5 ranked Mount Royal Cougars 3-1 on Sunday at Foote Field. Rookie sensation Gio Artenduaga added another goal and an assist on Sunday, as Alberta outshot the defending conference champion Cougars 14-5.
The victory moves Alberta to 2-0-0 on the young campaign, while Mount Royal falls to 1-2-0.Â
Artunduaga spearheaded the attack for the Golden Bears with a two-point performance, while defender
Thomas Hope and forward
Caden Ruby each found the back of the net.Â
Midfielder
Frankroy Cain was a constant threat, registering a game-high five shots (three on target), and forward
Prince Amanda tallied an assist. Goalkeeper
Lucas Robson turned aside three of the four shots he faced to secure the victory in his first career start for the Golden Bears. Â
For the Cougars, Skyler Rogers scored the lone goal on two shots on target, assisted by Bwidju Mutongolo. Goalkeeper Sjard Strauss made six saves under relentless pressure from Alberta.Â
Alberta dominated tempo from the kickoff, mounting early pressure before Artunduaga opened the scoring in the 20th minute, taking advantage of a poor Cougars turnover in their own box. Just seven minutes later, Artunduaga set up a Hope header off a free kick deep in MRU territory.Â
Mount Royal responded late in the opening half when Rogers finished a feed from Mutongolo in the 42nd minute to cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into the break.Â
The Golden Bears immediately reclaimed control early in the second half. In the 51st minute, Amanda set up Ruby for his first goal of the season to extend Alberta's advantage back to two goals. Cain nearly added a fourth moments later, but his strike hit the post in the 53rd minute.
The 2-0-0 Golden Bears will visit the Cougars next Friday night, before heading to Saskatoon for a meeting with the Saskatchewan Huskies on Sunday.Â
