Bears survive bloodbath with 1-1 draw against MRU

Alberta stays undefeated early in 2026

CALGARY — The Alberta Golden Bears maintained their undefeated start to the 2026 season, battling the Mount Royal Cougars to a hard-fought 1-1 draw on Friday night at Mount Royal Stadium.

A late penalty kick from Mount Royal's Finn Marshall erased a second-half opening strike from Alberta defender Thomas Hope, as the Golden Bears moved to 2-0-1 while the Cougars shifted to 1-2-1. Friday night's contest between rivals saw eight combined yellow cards, two red cards, 19 total fouls, and 16 shots.

Hope provided the offense for Alberta with his second goal of the campaign, setup by midfielder Justin George off a corner kick early in the second half. Goalkeeper Trystan Read stood tall between the pipes, stopping four of the five shots he faced to earn the draw.

GAME BREAKDOWN

Mount Royal controlled the tempo in the opening half, outshooting Alberta 6-2 and nearly opening the scoring in the fifth minute when Joe Green hit the crossbar. Read kept the match scoreless through halftime, making crucial saves on attempts from Green and Beckedahl.

Alberta capitalized on its limited opportunities early in the second half. In the 59th minute, Hope re-directed in a George corner to the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

The Cougars responded with relentless pressure, holding a 9-3 edge in corner kicks on the night. The persistence paid off in the 82nd minute when Mount Royal earned a penalty kick, which Marshall converted to level the score at 1-1. A fiery finish in stoppage time saw the Golden Bears reduced to nine men following second yellow cards to Josh Belbin and Jackson Belbin, but Alberta held firm through the final whistle to secure the road point.

After an off day tomorrow, the Bears will visit the Saskatchewan Huskies on Sunday.
