CALGARY – Luis Rangel-Kataev scored in the 11th minute and Efe Udolu-Joshua added a stoppage-time insurance goal as the University of Calgary Dinos beat the University of Alberta Golden Bears 2-0 on Sunday at McMahon Stadium, avenging a 3-0 loss to Alberta earlier this season.
The result flips the season series between the two teams, with Alberta having beaten Calgary 3-0 back on Sept. 5. The loss drops Alberta to 3-2-1 on the season, while Calgary improves to 5-2-0.
Rangel-Kataev opened the scoring in the 10th minute, finishing off a feed from Udolu-Joshua for his fourth goal of the year. Alberta had chances of its own in the first half, with Prince Amanda and Josh Belbin both forcing saves and blocks from Calgary keeper Oliver Allen, but couldn't find an equalizer. Calgary goalkeeper Allen was tested again after the break, turning away shots from Caden Ruby and Josh Pritchard-Cairns to preserve the clean sheet. Udolu-Joshua put the result away in the 90th minute, converting off a William Omoreniye assist for his first goal of the season.
Alberta out-shot Calgary 9-3 on target, but couldn't solve Allen, who finished with three saves for the shutout. Trystan Read made three saves in the loss for Alberta. Both sides picked up two yellow cards apiece in a physical, foul-filled affair.
The Golden Bears will host the Trinity Western Spartans on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 2:15 p.m. Calgary will host the UBC Okanagan Heat on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 4:30 p.m.
