EDMONTON - Third-year Frankroy Cain recorded a brace to lift the Alberta Golden Bears to a 5-0 victory over the UBCO Heat Saturday afternoon at Foote Field.
Cain doubled his season points total, and hit a remarkable goal from metres outside the box on what was a career-tying two point day. The rest of the squad also enjoyed a good day, as they outshot the Heat 16-6 (8-2 on target) and controlled the game for the vast majority of the 90 minutes. It was also career day for fellow third-year Jackson Belbin, who doubled his career point total with a goal and assist in the dominant win.
The win moves the Bears to 3-3-2 on the year, and they are strengthening their grasp on the fourth and final playoff position in the Prairie Division. The Heat fall to 0-6-1, and are still searching for their first victory in the 2025 Canada West campaign.
The Bears defenders were everywhere in the first half, scoring both goals and limiting the Heat chances with some strong backline play. The first goal of the frame was a beauty off the foot of Jackson Belbin, his first of the season, when a Frankroy Cain ball perfectly found the Alberta defender in the seventh minute for a very early 1-0 lead. Then, after a lengthy stretch of possession, the Bears would add another as it was right back Patrick Kondraciuk's turn to bury one as Belbin found him for his first on the year to give the home team a strong 2-0 lead, one they would carry into the break. The shots were 9-3 (4-2 on target) at the half, with both keepers getting work but the Bears were able to find twine twice.
The second half was all Frankroy Cain, as the stellar Alberta forward scored both goals for the hosts as they largely bottled up the Heat response in the second 45. The first came in the 55th-minute off of a bit of a misplay from Heat keeper Ronan Woodroffe, and Cain collected an errant pass and deposited it in the top left corner for a phenomenal strike, his second of the season. Then, just twelve minutes later, Cain was on the receiving end of a phenomenal Rodane Cato throughball, and Woodroffe had no chance as Cain scored his second of the day to put the hosts in firm control at 4-0. Ansun Minty would add another in the 88th-minute as the Bears finished this one 5-0 at Foote Field.
Alberta takes on the TRU Wolfpack tomorrow at home, while the Heat travel across Edmonton to take on the MacEwan Griffins.
