Ferrero scores dramatic late winner to lift Bears over 'Pack 1-0

Jack Ferrero scored his first career goal in the 80th-minute to save a win versus TRU

EDMONTON - First-year Jack Ferrero struck home the game-winning goal in the 80th-minute to give the Alberta Golden Bears a dramatic 1-0 victory over the TRU Wolfpack Sunday afternoon at Foote Field.

It was a gritty Sunday win, as both teams struggled to capture any momentum throughout most of the match. For Ferrero, it was his first career goal in just his sixth appearance, and an impressive one at that as he was on the receiving end of a beautiful Harry Malhi run and pass and sent a missile past a diving Toran Rutherford, TRU keeper.

The Bears move to 4-3-2 on the year, chasing the MRU Cougars for second place in the Prairie Division, while the 'Pack drop to 1-8-1 this year but did leave Edmonton with a win against Grant MacEwan yesterday.

The first half was a relatively slow and even affair. Alberta was certainly the aggressor through 45, controlling large swathes of play in the TRU zone, but the 'Pack held strong, only allowing four shots, none of which were on target. The visitors were effective as well attacking though, also ripping four shots in the first half. Easily the most impressive player of the first half was 'Pack keeper Toran Rutherford who faced some tricky crosses and in balls but was able to handle or punch each and every one of them.

The second half was even grittier than the first half, as for the majority of the half there was very little in the way of chances. Both teams struggled to get anything going until the 80th-minute, when Harry Malhi, who was fantastic all day, ran down the left side and sent a ball sprawling to the foot of rookie Jack Ferrero who made no mistake for his first career goal and gave the Bears a 1-0 advantage with little over 10 minutes to play. The 'Pack would play aggressive looking for the equalizer, but were bottled up by a Bears defence that was effective all day.

Next weekend the Bears host the Calgary Dinos and MRU Cougars, while the 'Pack head west to face the TWU Spartans and UFV Cascades.
