LETHBRIDGE – A first-half goal from Wanda Czebreszuk stood as the difference as the Alberta Pandas earned a 1-0 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Sunday afternoon at UofL Community Stadium.
Czebreszuk broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute, finding the net unassisted for her first of the season. It was the reward for a strong opening half in which Alberta pressed forward and controlled the pace.
Alberta outshot Lethbridge 15-4, forcing Pronghorns goalkeeper Kate Prince into eight saves. Czebreszuk led the Pandas with four attempts, three on target, while Brooklyn St. Amand recorded two shots on goal.
Lethbridge nearly equalized minutes before Czebreszuk's strike. Grace Klassen forced a save from Alberta keeper Autumn Wynn in the 22nd minute, and Kiandra Boulter struck the post seconds later. Wynn finished with two saves to secure her second clean sheet of the season.
The second half saw Alberta continue to generate chances. Mila Van der Veen and Makenna Van der Veen each tested Prince shortly after the hour mark, but the keeper was steady to keep her side in the game. Lethbridge's last push came in the 88th minute when Lainey Fischer directed a shot on goal, but Wynn was equal to the task.Â
Alberta finished with seven corner kicks to Lethbridge's three and held the Pronghorns to just two shots on goal.
With the result, Alberta moves to 1-0-1 on the season, while Lethbridge drops to 0-1-1. The Pandas will head to south next weekend for games against MRU and Calgary.Â
