Exciting relay finish gives Bears 2nd place at Canada West Championship

Bears score three gold on Saturday to claim second overall

REGINA – The Saskatchewan Huskies enjoyed a comfortable win on the women's side and the Manitoba Bisons took home the men's title at the 2025 Canada West Track & Field Championships held over the weekend at the Regina Fieldhouse.

The Golden Bears capped off the Canada West Championship with a gold medal in the 4x400m relay, beating the Manitoba Bisons by just four one-hundredths of a second.

Tyler Sharpe, who had earned silver medals in the 600m and 1000m earlier in the championship, had to stretch at the line running the anchor leg to secure the relay gold. Carl Chu, Jaffar Phudjo, and Clay Grattidge ran the first three legs of the relay.

Grattidge added a gold in the 600m earlier on Saturday with a time of 1:19.64. The third gold won by the Bears came from Wesley Eze, who defended his title in the shot put, setting a new personal best with a throw of 16.77m, the second longest throw in Alberta history. Eze was named the Canada West Field Athlete of the Year.

Third-year Bear Tegra Jan-King added a bronze in the triple jump with a distance of 14.09m, with the 4x200m relay team also placing third.

The Pandas placed third at the Canada West Championship in Regina, with Saturday being highlighted by a silver in the Pentathlon from Holly Harrison.

Harrison placed second with 3447 points, which saw the Panda place second in both the long jump and high jump, and third in the 60m hurdles.

Long-time Pandas throws coach Ceira Heshka-Wolf was named the Canada West Female Assistant Coach of the Year.

The teams will now prepare to close out their 2024-25 campaign at the U SPORTS Championships, which will be hosted by the University of Windsor from Mar. 6 through Mar. 8.
