CALGARY, Alta. — Despite
Abby Soyko tying the game with her fifth of the season with 27 seconds remaining, the Pandas fall to Mount Royal in a shootout on Friday in Calgary.
Soyko and
Natalie Kieser finished the game with three points each, as the top line for the Pandas scored all three goals in the loss.
Grace Glover stopped 18 shots for Alberta, while Scout Anderson made 13 saves for Mount Royal. The Cougars went 2-for-6 on the power play, and the Pandas were 0-for-6.
First Period
A tightly contested opening frame saw both teams trade chances before Mount Royal broke through late. With
Holly Magnus serving a penalty for interference, Sydney Benko converted on the power play at 19:53, finishing a feed from Isa MacPhee and Keyana Bert to give the Cougars a 1–0 lead heading into the intermission.
Second Period
Alberta drew level at 7:48, when
Natalie Kieser buried her first of the season from
Abby Soyko and
Raegan Yewdall at even strength. The Pandas killed off a mid-period tripping penalty to Abbey Bourdeaud'Hui, and goaltender
Grace Glover made key stops to keep the game tied at one after forty minutes.
Third Period
The Cougars regained the lead just 56 seconds into the third. On the power play, Bert struck from the slot, assisted by Benko and Summer Fomradas, to make it 2–1. Alberta answered midway through the period as Soyko evened the score at 8:54, converting after sustained offensive pressure.
Mount Royal responded once more at 14:47 when Allee Gerrard scored off a feed from Kaia Borbandy, restoring the home side's advantage at 3–2. The Pandas forced overtime in dramatic fashion with 27 seconds left in regulation, as Soyko netted her second of the night, assisted by Kieser and Magnus, tying the game at 3–3.
Shootout
Keyana Burt scored the lone goal in the shootout, with Anderson stopping all three Pandas attempts to earn the win.
