EDMONTON, AB — For the second-straight night, Pandas hockey clawed back from a third period deficit, only to fall in overtime against Mount Royal. The 3-2 OT win sees MRU earn a weekend series sweep over the Pandas.
The Pandas were down 2-0 early in the second and were being outshot 14-3, before flipping the script and tying the game 2-2. However MRU prevailed on a PP goal just over a minute into OT. The loss drops the Pandas to 3-5-4.
Katherine Holan finished with 23 saves for Mount Royal, while Alberta's
Mackenzie Dojahn stopped 19 shots. The Cougars went 1-for-2 on the power play, while the Pandas were 0-for-5.
First Period
Mount Royal struck first early in the opening frame. At 3:06, Allee Gerrard opened the scoring off a feed from Sydney Benko, giving the visitors a 1–0 lead. Alberta earned a power play midway through the period after Summer Fomradas was called for tripping, but the Cougars' penalty kill held firm, limiting the Pandas opportunities.
Second Period
The Cougars doubled their lead 53 seconds into the second. Gabby Lindsay scored her first of the season, assisted by Jordyn Hutt, extending Mount Royal's advantage to 2–0.
Alberta responded on the penalty kill after
Chayse Melnyk was sent off for roughing. At 7:00,
Natalie Kieser struck shorthanded to pull the Pandas within one.
The Pandas continued to press through the middle of the period, but Mount Royal goaltender Holan turned aside 13 shots in the frame. The Cougars held a 2–1 lead heading into the third.
Third Period
Just 17 seconds into the third, Alberta tied the game.
Holly Magnus scored from the slot off a setup from
Annie King, leveling the contest at 2–2. Neither team managed to break through again in regulation, sending the game to overtime for the second straight night.
Overtime
The Cougars secured the win on the power play after
Natalie Kieser was called for tripping at 0:59. Just 16 seconds into the advantage, Gerrard netted her second of the game and fifth of the season at 1:15, assisted by Jori Hansen-Young and Ava Metzger, sealing the 3–2 victory.
