EDMONTON, AB – The Manitoba Bisons secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Alberta Pandas on Saturday at Foote Field, registering a decisive result against a team sitting ahead of them in the standings. The win brings Manitoba's record to 1-9-1, while Alberta falls to 4-5-2 on the season.
The match's lone goal came late in the first half, as Lulu Bordeaux took advantage of strong winds from the north, sending a long-distance shot over the head of fifth-year Pandas keeper
Autumn Wynn.Â
Wynn was also tested early by Manitoba's Taylor Sousa and Chloe Morin, with both attempts requiring a save.
The Bisons' defence and keeper Holly Dyker, who earned the clean sheet, were formidable under pressure, especially in the second half. Dyker faced five shots on target and turned away every one, securing the victory. Both of the Pandas best scoring chances on Saturday came off the foot of
Makenna Van der Veen, but her breakaway attempt in the first half was sent wide of the Bisons net, and her second half strike being turned aside by Dyker.Â
Despite Alberta increasing their offensive output, particularly in the second half, the Bisons held the line. Pandas forward
Wanda Czebreszuk had a shot from in tight saved by Dyker, and
Kelli Haffie also saw her shot turned away as part of a stretch where Alberta racked up five corner kicks in the half.
Manitoba's counter-attack created moments of danger, including a shot by Sarina Mann and a strike from Breyanna Johnston-Krulicki, both requiring saves from Alberta's
Autumn Wynn. In the 77th minute, Manitoba's Bianca Cavalcanti launched a header that was also saved. Alberta's final significant attempt, a shot wide by
Emily Duxbury at 89:12, confirmed the shutout victory for Holly Dyker, who recorded five saves in the win.
Ultimately, Alberta outshot Manitoba 11-9 and held a significant edge in corner kicks (6-2), but the finish provided by Bordeaux was enough to earn Manitoba the three points.
