Panda Amanda Rummery qualifies for 2024 Paralympic Games

Rummery wins Para Ambulatory 400m at Canadian Trials

MONTREAL – Sprinter Amanda Rummery has punched her ticket to Paris, as she officially qualified for the 2024 Paralympic Games later this summer.

This is Rummery's first time qualifying for the Paralympic Games, after narrowly missing a spot in the 2021 Tokyo Games. The University of Alberta Education student and Pandas Track athlete met the standard in the Para Ambulatory 400m with a time of 59.08 last Friday.

"I came here to win and book my ticket to Paris," said Rummery, a 26-year-old left arm amputee who broke the Canadian record last month in the 400m. Her Canadian record time of 57.99 ranks her second in the world in 2024.

"Not making the 2021 team was a motivating factor for me. I was so new to Para sport at the time that I knew I had the ability to close the gap over the next three years."

Rummery is one of 14 Canadians who met the standard to qualify for the Paralympic Games in Athletics last weekend at the Olympic and Paralympic Trials in Montreal. While this will be her first Paralympic Games, Rummery has competed at the 2019 and 2023 World Para Athletics Championships, highlighted by a fourth place finish in the 400m at the 2023 World Championship in Paris.

Rummery currently holds the Canadian T46 record in the 100m, 200m, and 400m.

A graduate of MacEwan University, Rummery joined the Pandas Track & Field program in 2022 while working on her Education after-degree. Among her varsity track accomplishments was a third place finish among University runners in the 300m at the 2023 Pandas Open in Edmonton.

"It's so great to see Amanda's hard work pay off," said UofA sprint & hurdles coach Christie Moerman. "She tackled not only this year but last year as well with such determination and commitment. We are so proud of her and look forward to seeing what she can accomplish in Paris!"
