Bears offence explodes in 89-58 win versus MacEwan

Russell, Simon combine for 33 points to sweep the season series against the Griffins

EDMONTON - Fourth-year Max Russell scored a career-high 14 points to help the Bears sweep the MacEwan Griffins with a 89-58 victory Saturday evening at the Saville Centre.

He was flanked by Issac Simon, who had a game-high 19, and Patrick Fisher who flirted with a double-double at nine points and seven rebounds.

With the victory the Bears move to 6-4 on the season, while the Griffins drop to 0-10 and are still searching for their first victory in the campaign.

The visitors were paced by rookie Joel Seke who had a team-high 16 points to go with three rebounds and a steal.

The Bears offence was impressive in this one, shooting 54.5% from the field and knocking down 11 threes. They were also able to win the rebounding (38-34) and turnover (13-18) battle, showing a complete effort from the home side.

The first half was largely dominated by the Bears, who entered halftime with a 49-22 lead. They shot 52.6%, and dominated the turnover battle with four to MacEwans 10. The Griffins also struggled from the stripe, going 3/10. Adam Paige was the leading scorer at the break, putting up 13 for the Bears.

Simons exploded in the second half, scoring a high 10 points between the two frames. The Bears would not really let the Griffins back into it, as they tied or outscored them in both quarters. A 20-point fourth would put a bow on this game as the Bears finished with a dominant 89-58 victory.

The Bears are off to Winnipeg next weekend for a couple dates with the Wesmen, while the Griffins will look for their first victory against the Brandon Bobcats.
