WINNIPEG - Donald Stewart's only two steals of the game came at just the right time for the Winnipeg Wesmen.
The Wesmen men's basketball team held Alberta to 11 points and swung the game in its favour in the fourth quarter to beat the Golden Bears 70-65 in a Canada West conference game Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.
Alberta was limited to its second-lowest scoring output of the season, as the Wesmen (9-4) held an opponent to under 70 points for the fourth time this season.
Winnipeg forced the Golden Bears into a season-high 21 turnovers, seven coming in the fourth quarter, including a
Donald Stewart steal that finally helped give Winnipeg its first lead of the game with 5:59 remaining. After trailing for the first 34 minutes, the Wesmen put together an 11-2 run highlighted by Stewart's steal that led to a
Kato Jaro fastbreak lay-up that gave them a 57-56 lead. Alberta would not lead the rest of the game.
The Wesmen held the Bears to just one field goal — an
Isaac Simon lay-up 1:13 into the fourth — over a span of 8 minutes, 54 seconds that started with the Bears holding a 54-46 lead with 1:27 to go in the third and finally ended when Paige scored with 2:17 left in the fourth and brought Alberta to within a possession at 61-58.
The Golden Bears trimmed the lead to one on the next possession, but
Shawn Maranan responded with a clutch three the next time down to make it 64-60. Paige would get another lay-up to cut the lead in half, Maranan missed a runner on the next possession, and the Bears had a chance to tie with under 30 seconds to go, but an errant
Lars Ishimwe pass was stolen by Stewart and the Wesmen were able to close it out on free throws.
Jaro scored a career-high 18 points in 23 minutes off the bench. He hit 6 of 9 from the field and made all five free throws, including two in the final seconds. Maranan finished with 15 points and nine assists, and
Malachi Alexander scored 11 with three steals and a season-best 3-for-4 from three.
Paige had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead Alberta (6-5), which got 14 from Ishimwe and 10 from
Caiden Kushnir.
The win kept Winnipeg in sixth position in the conference, a half-game up on idle Brandon and tied with UBC and Calgary.
