A trio of Golden Bears with CFL aspirations were named to the annual U SPORTS East-West Bowl roster on Tuesday, as the national office unveiled the full list of 90 participants.Â
Kicker/Defensive Back
Jonathan Giustini, tailback
Matthew Peterson, and centre
Daniel Shin were named to Team West, with 2023 marking the 19th rendition of the East-West Bowl.Â
Giustini, a 2021 Canada West All-Star at kicker, is one of the few dual-position players in the nation. The third-year Calgary product recorded eight made field goals and 18 extra points in 2022, with his 47 points ranking fourth among kickers in Canada West. He also added 47.0 tackles and one interception playing all eight games for the Bears at free safety.Â
Peterson racked up 283 rushing yards in just five conference games in the fall, averaging 56.6 ground yards per game. The third-year back also added five receptions to go along with his 57 rushing attempts.Â
Shin started all eight conference games for the Bears at centre, anchoring an offensive line that finished third in the nation in passing yards, eighth in yards per game, and 10th in first downs. Shin, a third-year Business student, has started 17 games for Alberta over the last three seasons.Â
McMaster will serve as host to 90 of the top Canadian university football players eligible for the 2024 CFL Draft, each looking to showcase their skills to coaches, general managers and personnel from the Canadian Football League. All participating U SPORTS student-athletes will vie for coveted spots on the CFL Scouting Bureau Top 20 Prospects List.
Game time is set for 4pm ET on May 13th. It will be the second-straight year the Marauders have hosted the U SPORTS showcase at Ron Joyce Stadium.Â
