SASKATOON — A late touchdown strike from Jake Farrell to Mason Grabowski lifted the No. 4-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies to a 31–24 win over the Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday night at Griffiths Stadium.
Farrell finished 20-of-32 for 276 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception, while Bears starter
Trey Reider completed 16-of-28 passes for 238 yards and two scores for Alberta.
Carter Kettyle led all receivers with 96 yards and two majors.
The Huskies edged Alberta in total offense, 364-343, and held a nine-minute advantage in time of possession. Alberta's defense was anchored by
Dayton Ingenhaag, who recorded 11.5 tackles and a pass breakup, while
Tanner McBride added an interception.
With the win, Saskatchewan improved to 5–1 on the season, while Alberta fell to 1–5.
Alberta opened the scoring midway through the first quarter with a defensive stand that resulted in a safety, when the ball was snapped over the Huskies punter and into their own endzone. Saskatchewan responded two minutes later when Farrell connected with Daniel Wiebe for a 55-yard touchdown, giving the Huskies a 7–2 lead.
Farrell extended that advantage early in the second quarter, finding Dawson Lennea for a 14-yard score to cap a 12-play, 80-yard drive. Alberta answered before halftime when
Duncan Critch plunged in from two yards out, trimming the deficit to 14–8 at the break.
The Bears came out firing in the third. Reider engineered a four-play, 33-yard drive capped by an eight-yard touchdown pass to Kettyle, giving Alberta its first lead at 15–14. Saskatchewan quickly countered with a 12-yard touchdown run from Ryker Frank, but Alberta reclaimed momentum with a defensive safety at 1:47, then a 62-yard connection from Reider to Kettyle on the final play of the quarter to surge ahead 24–21.
The Huskies pulled even midway through the fourth when Lukas Scott converted a 31-yard field goal, before Farrell led a decisive late drive. With 1:18 remaining, the veteran pivot found Grabowski in stride for a 28-yard touchdown to seal Saskatchewan's comeback victory.
