There will be plenty of UAlberta representation at the
2023 Brier, as seven former Golden Bears will participate in the
Canadian Men's Curling Championship in London, Ontario.Â
It marks the largest ever contingent of Bears alumni to compete at one Brier, with the seven former Bears spread out over five teams representing three different provinces/territories. The 2023 Brier will run from March 3rd to 12th, with the winner representing Canada at the 2023 World Men's Curling Championship in Ottawa.Â
"I couldn't be happier for each and every one of these guys. Playing in the Brier is a product of their continued hard work and dedication since they've graduated," said UAlberta curling program head coach
Rob Krepps. "I hope that our program has given them a solid foundation to build from. But, as with most things in life, it's what you do with your opportunities that determines how high you rise."Â
Among the Bears competing in London are three former Canadian Champions;
Brendan Bottcher,
Brad Thiessen and
Karrick Martin. Thiessen and Martin will represent Team Alberta, after the duo won the Boston Pizza Cup with Team Koe at the River Cree Resort earlier this month.Â
Bottcher and his new rink will represent Wildcard #1. It will be the 7th Brier appearance for Bottcher, Thiessen, and Martin, who teamed up together for the previous six appearances.Â
Two other former Bears who competed at the Boston Pizza Cup have also been selected as a Wildcard entry, as
Karsten Sturmay and
Glenn Venance will compete as Wildcard #3.Â
A teammate of both Sturmay and Venance on the Bears 2018 U SPORTS Championship winning team, Jason Ginter will compete for Team BC under skip Jacques Gauthier.Â
Making his fourth apperance at the Brier,
Thomas Scoffin will return as the skip of Team Yukon.Â
